August 7th – 9th. Lake Towada to Yamada, Iwate Prefecture. 258km
Looking at a map, you may have noticed that our route so far hasn’t exactly been direct. From the ferry arriving in Hachinohe, we headed north, before going south again. But after leaving Towada, we started making good progress down right side of Japan towards Sendai.
August 4th – 6th. Aomori to Lake Towada. 119km
The ride down from our camp spot in the Hakkoda mountains was an easy 30km downhill. Halfway down we stopped at a museum and cemetery for a Japanese Army expedition that was caught in a blizzard in those mountains in 1902. 199 soldiers were killed in what is still the worst mountaineering disaster in modern history.
August 1st-3rd. Iwazmizawa to Hakkoda. 168km
Wow, what a way to start a bicycle tour. We’ve really been spoilt by the people, places and weather on these first couple of days on the road.
